Mental Capacity Act : Social Care Training – online via Teams

Course outline

This highly interactive day is designed to provide professionals with an in-depth knowledge, awareness and understanding of the Mental Capacity Act 2005, to ensure the rights conferred, and duties imposed, are recognised. Through trainer led discussions and practical case studies, the issues facing a professional will be examined, giving insight into difficult and sensitive decisions and how to handle them.

Key Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course a successful delegate will be able to:

  1. Identify the Core Principles of the Mental Capacity Act and apply them to day to day practice
  1. Identify the rights conferred and duties created by the Act to ensure they are embedded in practice and understand how the Act interfaces with other relevant legal frameworks
  1. Recognise the importance of placing the individual in the heart of the decision making process and ensure the Act is applied as “core business”
  1. Identify the link between autonomy and self-determination, consent, risk and choice and when coercion and undue influence may be a factor
  1. Identify the essential components of a robust assessment of capacity, decision making in best interests, and care planning to include recording and evidencing to best practice standards
  1. Explain the legal powers created by the Act ie Lasting Powers of Attorney, Deputy, Advance Decisions, verification
  1. Identify your role in applications to the Court of Protection for Welfare and Deprivation of Liberty case
