An encouraging event in January was the Farmers’ Mental Health Network meeting at the PAVO offices in Llandrindod Wells. 22 people, representing 15 organisations, came together to discuss issues around mental health in the farming community and to start planning joint activities.
The conversations were very wide ranging and passionate and covered issues of isolation, low rates of access to existing health services, the specific pressures faced by farmers on a seasonal basis, uncertainties caused by the current political situation and how to ensure that information reached those who most need it. There was a real desire to help change mindsets so that admitting mental health problems is not seen as a sign of failure.
Such was the commitment of those around the table that future networking events are planned. If your organisation wants to be included, please contact Sue Newham at PAVO: sue.newham@pavo.org.uk
